I recently read Joel Oleson's most recent (holiday) blog, which referenced Microsoft's white paper detailing some of the changes in Service Pack 1 for Office 2007 (including Windows SharePoint Services v3 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007).
In it was this chestnut, particularly relevant if you are planning or supporting a SharePoint deployment:
"Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 are the last SharePoint Products and Technologies versions able to run on 32-bit hardware and operating systems. Do take this into account in current and future hardware decisions: Buying 64-bit hardware today helps ensure that your environment can accommodate future requirements and helps you to take advantage of the performance and scale of 64-bit technologies."
We have been expecting such an announcement for some time and have been recommending 64-bit hardware to many of our clients whose performance requirements have dictated it. This announcement definitely clarifies Microsoft's plans and adds to the case for investing in 64-bit computing environments.
